A Fair Go For Safe Drivers Liberal/Nationals Licence Plan
Safe drivers would be rewarded and others encouraged to improve under a plan to cut licence renewal fees by 50% for people with driving records free of offences for at least five years, NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell and Shadow Minister for Roads Andrew Stoner unveiled today.
"This is a practical plan to reward people with good driving records and to encourage better driving behaviour in others," Mr O'Farrell said.
"It recognises and responds to community concerns that motorists aren't rewarded for safe driving," he said.
"While Labor is focussed solely on penalties and revenue raising, the NSW Liberal/Nationals believe a 'carrot and stick' approach can help achieve better road safety results.
"An estimated 1.8 million of the State's 4 million unrestricted licence holders would be eligible for the discount.
"This is a commonsense plan to give safe drivers a fair go," Mr O'Farrell said.
Under the NSW Liberal/Nationals plan drivers with unrestricted licences and who had recorded no driving offences for at least five years will receive a 50% discount on licence renewals. The discount applies whether the licence is renewed for 1, 3 or 5 years.

A similar scheme has been operating in Victoria since 2006.
"It's time motorists knew that the State's licensing system offered rewards as well as penalties," Mr Stoner said.
"This plan gives motorists an incentive to end their bad habits and improve their driving behaviour.
"It would also ease the financial burden for safe drivers at a time when many are finding it tough to make ends meet," Mr Stoner said.
